Vacation

I’m taking a break for a couple weeks—I’ve been visiting family, and I’m letting myself recharge for a while. While I’m doing that, feel free to revisit some of my old favorites:

  • If you’re feeling stressed, check out my thoughts on stress management: part one and part two.
  • If you’re struggling with self confidence and would like one concrete thing you can start doing today, here it is.
  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed because of all the things you “have to” do, allow me to suggest a reframing.

I’ll be back with some more suggestions for old favorites next week.

Let Other People Make Their Own Damn Decisions

So, I have a confession to make. (I hope you’re sitting down.) When I need a feel-good read, my go-to genre is often romantic urban fantasy (as in, romance set in a modern big city, but with magic or psychic powers or angels or shapeshifters or somesuch). Ilona Andrews can do no wrong, that’s all I’m saying. 😊 Unfortunately, there’s a trope that’s littered throughout the genre (and probably standard romance too, but I don’t

The Power of Repetition

I often hear sponsees ask “How often should I meditate/go to meetings/call you/etc?” Similarly, it’s often the case that people outside of recovery ask, “How long do you have to keep going to those meetings?” It turns out that neither of these questions has anything to do with recovery. They’re about the power of repetition. I had the opportunity to sponsor a professional bodybuilder for a few years, and by talking to me about weightlifting,

The Broken-ness of “I Should Be …”

There were countless times early in my recovery process when I would think to myself, “I should be {insert self-critical thing here}.” I would berate myself about what I should be doing, how far I should have progressed, what sort of job or girlfriend I should have, how my thinking or behavior should have improved, and so forth. Occasionally, I would even share these thoughts with someone I trusted in my recovery circle. At one

Are More Achievements the Way to Self-Confidence?

I saw someone on Instagram recently espousing a broken philosophy about how to develop self-confidence. I’m paraphrasing here, but basically they said: If you’re struggling with self-confidence, don’t bother with affirmations or self-talk or anything like that. Just go out and achieve awesome things until you can no longer deny your own greatness. This is one of the classic blunders of self-confidence. I’ve fallen into it, and I’ve seen many other people fall into it

The Intentional Practice of Gratitude

I know — Thanksgiving was months ago. Why am I talking about the intentional practice of gratitude now? Can’t I even read a calendar? 🤣 I’m talking about gratitude now because, in my experience, there’s never a bad time for gratitude. One of the clichés that gets tossed around recovery a lot is the idea that “A grateful addict won’t use.” Outside of recovery, in her excellent Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown summarizes some
